The alpha animal

this was one of my earliest poems, one i'd submitted to my college magazine...a satirical take on human 'progress' in the last few decades...called 'The Alpha Animal' i.e. us humans, of course...:P

Welcome to a new dawn, a new age,

Elders’ wisdom be gone, follow a new adage.

I aim for the sky as I leave behind the ground,

Further my own interests as troubles abound.

I speak of ending terror and setting things right,

Yet I am the silent killer at night..

Live in a civil society, with its customs and manners,

Full of wolves in sheepskin and devious planners.

I feign sympathy and helping those in pain,

While I plunder the weak for financial gain.

The odd charitable, the stray ray of light,

I crush without a heart with capitalistic might.

I surf the net that faster than I know,

Chancing upon the odd blatant skin show.

I’ve made personal music smarter by manifold,

That’s made our children distant and cold.

I cheer for unity, and toast bonhomie,

While I divide to rule and hoard all for me.

Condemning weapons, labelling dictators senile,

I feverishly work in secret to build my own pile.

I, the human, have taken the lead,

I have ushered in a glorious age indeed.

Something upon which the future can thrive,

That’s if my onslaught the future can survive.
